Conversations and Connections!

Fridays at Nigah are back, and this month let's meet up again, get to know each other, and later, hear Winston Wilde, an amazing queer activist from the US, talking about his life and multiple ways of living queerly. He's been an activist for 29 years: in 1973, at age 16 he helped to establish the Los Angeles Gay Community Center (now the LA Gay & Lesbian Center), and later, to organize the One Institute, the largest gay and lesbian archives in the world. Now, with a PhD in human sexuality, a book to his name and a psychotherapy practice for erotic minority clients, he's the perfect person to talk about the possibilities queerness opens up. Also, he's looking for a boyfriend! :) So come, join us on

Queer your Fridays with Nigah, as we sit back, chit-chat, watch movies and talk about gender and sexuality.

Join us this Friday as we discuss anything or everything that’s queer, chill out over endless gupshup and films, meet old friends and make new ones.

This time lets get together without movies or discussions. If there is something you have written that you want to share, you are welcome to. We can talk about any book you've recently read.Or seen some good movies lately? You might meet someone else in the crowd who has a perspective on them. Let's sit down and hang out together!

At Nigah, we try our best to make our events as safe and welcoming for all queer people with multiple identities and expressions. However, this month's event at Kunzum Cafe will not be a closed door event. The cafe will remain open to patrons after Fridays at Nigah commences, but Kunzum cafe and Nigah will observe some queer safe-space ground-rules: No Photography, No Media and No Homophobic or Transphobic behaviour is welcome.

NIGAH is a queer collective that works on issues of gender and sexuality. Apart from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, we understand queer to be any identity, politics or process that challenges dominant norms. Based in Delhi, we try to create inclusive and safe queer spaces using media, training, and conversations.

अगस्त ११ की याद मे

इस बार गुरुवार को! 

11 अगस्त 1992 को दिल्ली मे  आई.टी .ओ. के सामने एड्स भेदभाव विरोधी आन्दोलन के नेतृत्व में एक विरोध प्रदर्शन हुआ क्योंकि  दिल्ली पुलिस ने कनौट प्लेस के सेंट्रल पार्क में मिलने-जुलने वाले समलैंगिक पुरुषों पर रेड की थी. ऐसा माना जाता है कि दिल्ली मे यह पहला ऐसा प्रदर्शन था जिसमे लोग पुलिस उत्पीडन के विरोध मे सयुंक्त रूप से सामने आए यह होते हुए भी कि इनमें से कुछ ही अपने आपको खुद समलैंगिक मानते थे. 

लगभग बीस साल गुजर गए हैं. आज हम किस प्रकार और कैसे सार्वजानिक स्थानों को देखते है? उन पर अधिकार जताते हैं? बहुत सी चीज़ें बदल गई हैं पर एक चीज़ जो नहीं बदली वह है 11 अगस्त का महत्त्व. उस दिन जो मुद्दे उठाये गए थे वो आज भी दिल्ली के क्वीयर लोगो के लिए बहुत खास हैं.

11 अगस्त की  याद में आयोजित एक खुली चर्चा मे सब आमंत्रित है.  विरोध प्रदर्शन और एक्टिविज्म के बदलते चरित्र और कल्चर पर बातें होंगी. इस चर्चा में कोई विशेषज्ञों का दल या भाषण नहीं होगा बल्कि हम ही में से कुछ चर्चाकर होंगे जो अपने विचारों और अलग-अलग जनान्दोलोनो के अपने अनुभवों से हमारे विचारों को उत्तेजित करेंगे. इनमे से कुछ लोग हैं:  जया शर्मा (निरंतर), नैसर्गि दवे, विमल भाई (राष्ट्रीय जनांदोलन संघठन) और कलि (डार्ट).

Remembering August 11th

A Fridays at Nigah so special its on a Thursday!  

On August 11, 1992 the AIDS Bhedbhav Virodhi Andolan (ABVA) led a protest at ITO in New Delhi against police raids that targeted gay men cruising in central park in Connaught Place. What was remarkable about this first public queer protest in Delhi against police harassment was that it was led by a group of people only a few of whom identified as gay or lesbian.

Nearly twenty years have passed. Why and how we organise, claim public spaces, protest and even how we celebrate sexuality have changed in many ways and yet the issues raised that day, 19 years ago, are still very much part of queer lives today.

Join us to mark August 11th with an open discussion on cultures of activism and protest. No panels or speeches but a set of voices across movements to get us started that includes: Jaya Sharma (Nirantar), Naisargi Dave (anthropologist), Vimal Bhai (NAPM) and Kali (DART).

इस शुक्रवार, सावन के इस मदमस्त महीने के आने से, यह समय हो चला हैं थोडा कुछ ज़बरदस्त और भड़कती हुई साल्सा की ताल पर थिरक कर पसीने से सराबोर हो जाने का! जिसमे थोड़ी हंसी और मस्ती की फुहार छिडकाने, हमारे कार्यशाला शंचालक सुभाशीष मंडल वहां हमारे लिए शुरुआत कर रहें हैं एक बेहद सेक्सी नृत्य शैली की!

Fridays at Nigah: Salsa Night

At Fridays at Nigah, on the second Friday of every month, we catch up and hang out over endless gupshup and films, make new friends and meet old ones as we discuss anything and everything that’s queer.

This Friday, as the monsoons arrive, it's time to work up a sweat to some sizzling salsa moves! Add a dash of fun and laughter as our workshop coordinator Subhashish Mandal gets us kickstarted on one of the sexiest dance forms out there…

इस चिलचिलाते पर मधोश कर देने वाली गर्मी के मौसम मैं शुक्रवार को हमारे पास हे एक लघु फिल्मों का मिला-झुला सुहावना नज़राना, जिसमे शामिल हैं: लौन्द्रोमेट से एक यादगार मुलाकात, पब्लिक रेलेशुन्स से कुछ मनचली शरारतें, अमेन से गरमा-गरम मिलन, और द ओल्ड वोमेन्स प्रोजेक्ट से कठिन, संघर्ष-भरे अनुभव -- और भी बहुत कुछ | आओ भी यारों!
